Why is the 2020 Grand Blue Mile being held virtually?

As the second largest one-mile community run and walk in the nation, we will not be able to ensure the proper social distancing of all participants through the one-mile race course in Downtown Des Moines in 2020. To continue prioritizing the health and well-being of our participants, spectators and community, this year’s event is moving to an all-virtual format.

When will the virtual race take place?

The virtual Grand Blue Mile will launch Tuesday, Sept. 29 and run through Wednesday, Oct. 7. The mile is widely considered the most fundamental racing distance and now it’s accessible to anyone, anywhere! No matter where you are in your fitness or what goals you have in mind, you’ll be ready for your virtual race by following along with these simple training guides.

Where can I run/walk?

Anywhere! This is your virtual race, and we want you to complete it wherever you want. Sidewalks, trails, treadmill – make this run your own. Want to jog with a stroller or pet? Do it! We just ask that you share photos on social media using #GrandBlueMile and tag Drake Relays so we can see your run!

How do I track my distance and time?

For the virtual Grand Blue Mile, we accept finish times on the honor system, but the most accurate results can be obtained with a GPS tracking app on a mobile device.

How do I submit my results online?

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 29 virtual race results can be submitted here, using these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Search and select the name of the participant you want to submit results or upload photos for
  2. Click ‘Submit Results’ or ‘Upload Photos’
  3. Login to your EnMotive account, if you are not already
  4. You will be redirected to the page to submit results or upload photos
  5. Click ‘Save’ and check the leaderboard to see how your time compares!

When can I submit my results online?

The virtual Grand Blue Mile will take place from Tuesday, Sept. 29 through Wednesday, Oct. 7. During this period you can add your time to the virtual leaderboard using the step-by-step instructions above.

When should I expect to receive my race packet?

Race packets will be mailed beginning the week of Sept. 7 to those who upgrade to a premium virtual registration. To ensure you receive your race packet before the launch of the virtual race, upgrade to a premium virtual registration by Sept. 1 to allow for shipping and delivery between 7 – 10 business days.

Can I still earn the Bulldog Double medal?

Yes, if you participate in both the virtual Grand Blue Mile and the virtual Drake Road Races you will earn the Bulldog Double medal! Register for the virtual Drake Road Races here.
